Chihowa Retreat Center was founded for purposes of contributing to the spiritual growth of those who use its facilities, and to encourage the development of more permanent bonds within the brotherhood of man.
The center's construction began in 1960, when Mr & Mrs Waldon Norris contributed 35 acres of land to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
The center has been built almost entirely with volunteer help from the Kaw Valley District of the Church and friends.  The Army Corps of Engineers assisted in constructing a 4 1/2 acre lake.

Two cabins were built in 1964, and a lodge by the lake in 1970-71.  The main lodge and resident's managers home were built in 1968-69 on forty-two Saturdays by 270 church members, indicative of the effort and spirit which has made the retreat center a reality.
